WARSAW, May 24. Polish law enforcement authorities detained a Ukrainian with a painting stolen in 2005 from the Dutch museum in Hoorn, reported Polsat TV channel.
“Officers of the Carpathian Border Detachment in one of the private apartments in Krakow discovered a 17th-century oil painting “Rebekah and Elijah” by the Dutch artist Jan Linsen, stolen from the West Friesland Museum in Hoorn in 2005,” the report says.
According to Polish law enforcement officers, the Ukrainian brought the painting to Poland, presumably for the purpose of sale. The valuable item was confiscated and the Ukrainian citizen was detained.
In 2005, unknown persons robbed the West Frisian Museum in Hoorn. The thieves took out 24 ancient paintings and several other artifacts, including the coffin of Vice Admiral Peter Floris, who lived in the city in the 17th century. The investigation reached a dead end; nothing was heard about the stolen museum valuables for ten years.
In April 2016, the Ukrainian security service reported the discovery of four paintings from a Dutch museum. At the same time, the department did not say where exactly these paintings were found, noting only that the works were under the control of “criminal groups”, and the special operation to find them “covered almost the entire country.”
