Individual entrepreneurs buy less in supermarkets than employees

Tinkoff Business, as part of the Tinkoff Data analytical project, studied the consumer preferences of individual entrepreneurs and compared their expenses for everyday needs with the expenses of people who do not have their own business, and also assessed the change in turnover in different business categories for year.

The study is based on anonymized data on transactions of individual clients who are not engaged in business, as well as the turnover of Tinkoff business clients registered as individual entrepreneurs in 55 categories business. The indicators for the first quarter of 2023 and the first quarter of 2024 were compared.

Individual entrepreneurs spend more money on personal needs

The structure of personal expenses of entrepreneurs and people who do not have their own business is practically the same. But businessmen spend on average one and a half times more on personal needs than ordinary citizens.

The share of expenses for purchases in supermarkets from entrepreneurs is 24%, which is noticeably lower than that of the average Russian ( 31%). Entrepreneurs also spend less on fast food, but more on purchases in construction stores: 7% versus 5% for individuals.

The biggest difference in expenses between individual entrepreneurs and individuals is felt in the categories «Home and repair» and «Clothes and footwear», where entrepreneurs' expenses are 77% and 74% higher. Individual entrepreneurs also have significantly higher expenses on car services (+68%), restaurants (+66%) and financial services: insurance, brokerage services, transfers to payment wallets (+62%).

It is noteworthy that individual entrepreneurs also spend more than ordinary buyers on:

  • art — by 74%;
  • cosmetics — by 68%;
  • charity — by 62%;
  • beauty salon services — by 58%;
  • music — by 55%.

In the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, monthly expenses of an entrepreneur increased by an average of 19%.

Individual entrepreneurs increased their spending the most in the following categories:

  1. digital goods: subscriptions to entertainment and educational online services and content — by 181%;
  2. public services — by 44%;
  3. hotels — by 37%;
  4. train tickets — by 29%;
  5. public transport — by 28 %.

Average monthly turnover of individual entrepreneurs in individual segments increased several times

In the first quarter of 2024, compared to the same period in 2023, the average monthly turnover of individual entrepreneurs increased by 32%.

The turnover of individual entrepreneurs, whose activities are related to metal trading, increased the most over the year. mining: +218% and +144%, respectively.

The areas with the largest increase in average monthly turnover for individual entrepreneurs also included:

  • wholesale trade computers and software — by 68%;
  • passenger transportation — by 62%;
  • travel agencies — by 54%;
  • wholesale trade in construction materials — by 40% ;
  • hotels — by 40%;
  • IT and software development — by 38%;
  • architectural activities — by 36%;
  • financial and insurance activities — by 36 %.

In terms of average monthly turnover, the leaders are entrepreneurs whose activities are related to wholesale trade:

  • computers and software;
  • building materials;
  • products;
  • cars.
