The State Hermitage and T-Bank have begun cooperation, within the framework of which it is planned to restore the painting “Mary in Glory” by the Dutch Renaissance artist Jan Provost, issue cards with a limited design for T-Bank clients, as well as organize a special event in the Hermitage for new and existing clients of T-Bank.
Restoration of the painting “Mary in Glory”
T-Bank supports restoration work on a painting by Northern Renaissance artist Jan Provost. «Mary in Glory» was painted in 1524 for the Church of St. Donatian in Bruges. During the iconoclastic movement of the 1560s, the painting was saved by walling it up in the wall of the temple. It remained in this cache until the end of the 18th century and was accidentally discovered in the ruins of a cathedral destroyed by the French during the invasion of Belgium. Later, in 1850, the painting entered the Hermitage from the collection of the Dutch king Willem II in The Hague.
«Mary in Glory» is an altar image with a plot typical of religious painting.
The restoration project involves a complex of works, including physical and chemical studies of the structure of the work, thinning and leveling a thick layer of old varnish over the entire surface, replacing losses of the original painting and other processes.
It is planned that the restoration will last until the end of 2024. The pearl of the Hermitage collection of Dutch painting of the 15th–16th centuries will once again acquire an exquisite colorful sound, hidden today under yellowed varnishes and renovations. The results of the restoration will be presented at a temporary exhibition, after which the painting will return to the main exhibition.
