MOSCOW, 30 Jun. Potentially dangerous asteroid 2024 MK missed the Earth at a distance of approximately 300 thousand kilometers on Sunday night, according to the Telegram channel of the international network of optical telescopes of the Keldysh Institute of Applied Mathematics of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
“Last night, the network’s telescopes observed the passage of the potentially dangerous asteroid 2024 MK, a relatively large celestial rock of the Apollo group, which missed the Earth at a distance of about 300 thousand km,” the report says.
According to the European Space Agency, asteroid 2024 MK was spotted on June 16, 2024, its size ranges from 120 to 260 meters.
Total, according to data NASA , more than 35 thousand near-Earth objects are known, of which about ten thousand are over 140 meters in size. They are considered potentially dangerous. If the probability of a collision is not zero, the asteroid is added to a special list. But in any case, the risk of a catastrophe is extremely small.
The European Space Agency's list of potentially dangerous asteroids includes 1,626 objects. The first line is occupied by a body with the designation 2023VD3, which will fly close to the Earth in November 2034.
