LG’s rollable TV finally goes on sale — but it will set you back £66,000

LG’s rollable TV has finally gone on sale nearly two years on from its initial debut at an eye-watering price of £66,000.

The 65-inch Signature OLED R, which is now on sale in South Korea, features a flexible screen which roll up to disappear into a frame alongside the sound bar.

The Signature OLED R, first unveiled two years ago at the Consumer Electronics Show 2018, is designed to allow its owners "curate their living environment."

As well as hiding completely in its base, the 4K displaycan rise out of it partially, giving users the option to watch a smaller screen for tasks such as playing music.

The entry of the rolling screen into the consumer market is likely to pave the way for a wealth of new products over the coming years.

Samsung is reportedly exploring how rolling screens could be used in smartphones. Earlier this year, the company  showed off its Sero rotating TV, that would allow users to view the screen vertically.

As far back as 2010, Sony had shown off its own rolling LED prototype. It is also believed to be exploring the use the technology in a smartphone.

Park Hyoung-sei, president of LG Home Entertainment, said the TV “genuinely deserves to be called a work of art”.

“This is a true luxury product that re-imagines what television can be, this unique TV delivers a differentiated user experience and a new way of thinking about space while once again confirming LG’s leadership in the premium TV market,” he said.

The electronics giant described the unit as the “definition” of exclusive with a limited run of the TVs expected, however LG did not say how many would be made or when they will be available in the UK.

The company said the TV will allow homeowners to curate their living rooms without having to permanently set aside space for a large, black screen that’s only useful when turned on.

TV manufacturers have long sought to reduce the intrusiveness of black screens in people’s sitting rooms. LG is one of a number of companies that offers the option of displaying artwork on its TVs when they are not in use.
