When asked if he himself had stopped eating meat, he replied: “Now I hardly eat red meat, indeed, I have about two, two or maybe three pieces of red meat a month, and it's actually mostly duck and venison, not beef. I used to be a big beef lover. I reduced it to almost zero.”
Lord Turner said paying other countries to proactively prevent further deforestation «won't work in the long run» as long as red meat and palm oil use remained high.
«If we don't find a way, in the end finally turn off the demand that leads to the deforestation of the rainforests, and this is mainly red meat … and palm oil, ”he said.
«If we don't have a final solution, no amount of money will solve this problem in the long run.»
On Thursday morning, it became known that food prices continued to rise, as data from the Office for National Statistics confirmed that they had reached their highest level in 45 years.
While inflation eased slightly, falling to 10, 1% year-on-year from 10.4% in March to February, supermarket prices remained consistently high.
'Cease-out'
Lord Turner further urged richer countries to substantially increase payments to poorer to combat deforestation in order to help in the short term.
“We should try to very significantly increase the amount of money that rich developed countries give developing [countries] to help them cope with law enforcement,” he said .
“In some cases, in order to pay for these deforestation prevention projects, we say that we really need a large amount of money, it must be a very large commitment. But let's be clear that this is a temporary measure.”
