Representatives of Astana Motors said that they continue to develop car production in Kazakhstan: the manufacturer intends to increase the degree of localization.
Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Rus (HMMR), located in St. Petersburg, went on a downtime in the spring of last year, when a lack of components was cited as the reason for this decision. Subsequently, the company's management extended the downtime several times. In January of this year, the plant started the process of laying off employees, but the company still does not report what fate awaits the Hyundai plant in the Russian Federation.

At the end of last year, the HMMR enterprise was partially restarted: then they began to stamp parts, weld and paint bodies for Hyundai Solaris. True, the company immediately made a reservation: the manufactured products were not intended for the Russian Federation, they were sent to the conveyor of the Kazakh plant located in Alma-Ata for the final assembly of cars.
At the end of February, information appeared in the media that a certain company from Kazakhstan could acquire the St. Petersburg plant. Kirill Soloveichik, Chairman of the Committee for Industrial Policy, Innovation and Trade of St. Petersburg, spoke about the plans then. It should be noted that the name of the potential buyer was not named, but there were suggestions that Astana Motors could play its role (Hyundai Trans Kazakhstan, where the bodies were sent from the St. Petersburg site, is its subsidiary).

Now TASS reports that Astana Motors is denying plans to buy a Russian car plant Hyundai. The press service of the Kazakhstani company spoke about the immediate plans, which do not include the acquisition of assets of a Korean manufacturer in the Russian Federation.
Representatives of Astana Motors stressed that the company «has no plans to enter a plant in the Russian Federation.» The company's immediate plans include the further development of car production in Kazakhstan, the deepening of localization, as well as an increase in the number of models that are produced by small-scale assembly.

The press service also noted that this year the Kazakhstani company Astana Motors is going to start building a plant for the production of locally assembled components for Hyundai cars. The production site will be located in the industrial zone of Alma-Ata. It will produce car seats, multimedia systems, mud flaps, fender liner and polyurethane mats.
This means that the future of the Russian Hyundai plant is still vague. It is worth recalling that the St. Petersburg enterprise is designed to produce more than 200 thousand cars annually. Previously, Hyundai Solaris and Creta, as well as Kia Rio and Rio X were produced here. The cars were delivered to dealers in the Russian Federation and sent to the markets of other countries.
