Elon Musk's Tesla is poised to break into the UK energy market by selling electricity to the public.

Tesla is developing plans to register as an electricity supplier with the industry regulator and launch » retail electricity product in the UK. ”, reads the job listing.

The company is looking for an experienced energy executive to serve as head of operations for Tesla Electric in the UK.

The service, which will be available to owners of the company's Powerwall home batteries, is expected to allow the sale of electricity to UK households and the purchase of stored energy at times of peak demand.

Powerwall batteries can be set to charge automatically at night when energy is cheap. and then release that energy to use during the day when buying direct online is more expensive.

An advertisement for the role, located in London or Manchester, says that Tesla aims to «support the transition of the entire electrical grid to 100% renewable energy» by making more extensive use of home batteries.

Tesla is known as the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, but also sells home batteries that cost around £9,500 to install. According to an industry source, between 10,000 and 20,000 vehicles have been placed in British households.

Tesla vehicle owners may also eventually take advantage of this service, in line with Ofgem's plans to allow the sale of electric vehicles. electricity back to the grid.

Earlier this year, Musk laid out a «master plan» to lead global efforts to move away from fossil fuels, including putting people on electric cars, massively increasing renewable energy production, and switching households to heat pumps.

Tesla launched an energy utility in Texas in December, promising to save households money by selling electricity from owners' batteries to the grid during peak hours and buying it back when it's cheaper.

In Texas, the company's off-peak rates are about a third lower than the standard rates of other energy providers. Some users report making over $100 (£78) selling electricity on days when extreme heat stresses the state's unreliable power grid.

New Tesla owners who sign up for the plan can also charge their electric vehicles overnight for free for the first year, which the company says saves about $360.

The «virtual power plant» system is designed to eliminate the need to turn on coal and gas during peak periods when renewable sources cannot meet demand, instead consuming electricity stored in people's homes.

Users can track their consumption and manage bills through the Tesla app.

Tesla's job posting says the company is seeking Ofgem for a power supply license that allows utilities to sell residential and non-residential power. Suppliers require a separate license for gas distribution.

The announcement says the company is looking for candidates with «a proven track record of running retail energy programs and a healthy skepticism about the status quo.»

Tesla has flirted with the UK energy market in the past. It launched an electricity plan provided by Octopus Energy in 2020, but the automaker pulled out of the deal earlier this year, indicating it plans to launch its own service. The company also has a power generation license that allows it to sell electricity on a commercial basis.

Mr Musk suggested earlier this year that Tesla would make and sell its own heat pumps, which are considered critical for refusal of gas in households. -energy heating and electricity.

The company's entry into the market comes against the backdrop of a two-year crisis for British energy suppliers. Rising wholesale prices have caused dozens of providers to go bankrupt, and capping billing prices has stagnated competition among providers.

Tesla did not respond to a request for comment.
