Oscar Pistorius has been granted parole ten years after killing his girlfriend in one of the South's most notorious crimes Africa.
The 37-year-old Blade Runner sprinter has been effectively paroled since Jan. 5, 2024, the Department of Corrections said after a hearing Friday.
Pistorius shot him dead girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, 29, in the early hours of Valentine's Day 2013.
He fired four shots through a closed toilet door in the bedroom of his Pretoria home while Ms Steenkamp was inside.
Prosecutors said Ms Steenkamp, then 29, was killed as she hid in a toilet after a violent argument.
Pistorius, the only witness, said that it was a terrible accident: he didn't know that his girlfriend had gotten up to go to the toilet and mistook her for a dangerous intruder at the door.
After a lengthy trial that captivated South Africa, he was finally convicted convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years in prison.
He became eligible for parole earlier this year after serving half his sentence.
