“The cucumber crop was harvested at Vostok station for the first time. In 60 days from the date of planting, we managed to grow 16.5 kilograms of fruit,” the message says.
Scientists reported that the harvest of all vegetables this time was “record.”
Earlier, Russian polar explorers were the first to successfully grow watermelons in Antarctica. The institute noted that growing cucumbers at the station was much easier than watermelons, since they are less demanding.
According to scientists, in two greenhouses at Vostok station, using soilless Panoponics technology, up to 100 kilograms of cucumbers, 29 kilograms of tomatoes, 11 kilograms of sweet peppers and 149 kilograms of kale can be grown on one square meter of area per year.
Vostok Station is the only year-round inland Russian station in Antarctica. In July 1983, the lowest air temperature on the planet was recorded — minus 89.2 degrees.
