MOSCOW, Nov. 22 The ejection of solar matter will lead to increased geomagnetic activity, but it most likely “will not reach the previously predicted magnetic storm,” said Maria Abunina, an employee of the IZMIRAN Space Weather Forecast Center.
Previously, the Laboratory of Solar X-ray Astronomy of the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics (ISTP) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences predicted a magnetic storm from November 22 to 26.
«The concept of a «storm», in scientific terms, is when certain thresholds in the values of geomagnetic indices are exceeded. If a K-index occurs geomagnetic activity 5, the storm has begun. While according to forecasts, probably, a five will not happen, a four will certainly happen. That is, it will not reach the storm,» Abunina said.
According to her, the change in the forecast is due to the fact that the speed of the ejection of solar matter, which occurred on November 16, turned out to be significantly less than expected, and therefore the disturbance of the magnetic field will be less Earth.
Scientists at the Solar X-ray Astronomy Laboratory also no longer promise a magnetic storm: according to the forecast dated November 21, the Earth’s magnetosphere will be calm in the coming week.
