MOSCOW, December 17. Soviet, Georgian and French film director Otar Ioseliani died at the age of 89, his friend, journalist Yuri Rost, reported on the Telegram channel.
«We are in grief. Otar Ioseliani, a great film director, an amazing person and mine, has passed away closest friend,” he wrote.
Otar Ioseliani was born in 1934 in Tbilisi. In 1965 he graduated from the directing department of VGIK. His first feature film Falling Leaves (1966) received a special press award at the Cannes Film Festival and the George Sadoul Prize for best debut work. In 1979, Ioseliani was awarded the title of Honored Artist of the Georgian SSR.
Since the 1980s, the director worked in France, where in 1984 he shot the film “Favorites of the Moon,” which received a special jury prize at the Venice Film Festival. The same prize was awarded to two more films: “And the Light Became” (1989), as well as “The Robbers. Chapter VII” (1996), which was also awarded the prize for best director.
Known for the films “Once Upon a Song Thrush” «, «Pastoral», «Butterfly Hunt», «Chandrapa». Winner of the Silver Bear, two-time winner of the Nika Award, holder of the French Legion of Honor.
