VELIKIY NOVGOROD, January 9A massive accident on the M-11 highway in the Novgorod region occurred after a Chery collided with a fence: the “Chinese” had tires that did not match the weather — there was severe frost outside, on the road ice, reports SUSC for the region.
The largest traffic accident in recent times on the toll highway between Moscow and St. Petersburg occurred on Monday at the 525th kilometer: 66 trucks and cars collided. Four people were killed: two drivers (men 70 and 50 years old) and two passengers (a 30-year-old woman and a 9-month-old child) — and 19 more were injured, including five children.
Traffic towards Moscow had to be blocked for many hours. On Tuesday morning, travel along the highway was completely restored.
“It has been previously established that a Chery car driven by a 70-year-old resident of Kovrov lost control and collided with a metal fence. The driver was locked in the car, and his wife left the car to set up a warning triangle and call for help,” the SUSC describes the beginning mass accident.
After some time, however, cars traveling in the same direction “began to make successive collisions with Chery and with each other,” including the Honda driver, who, trying to avoid a collision, also ran into a fence.
«The driver and his wife left the car and went out onto the roadway, where they became victims of an accident. There were two children in the car, born in 2021 and 2023. The 9-month-old child died on the spot, the second was taken to the hospital,” the release said.
According to preliminary data, “tyres that do not meet road conditions” were installed on the rear axle of the Chery, which could have caused the first accident. As the SUSC clarified, the tires look like summer tires, but they can also be worn out for winter. An examination will put an end to this issue.
In addition, investigators are looking into how well the contractor maintained the road. In fact, criminal cases have already been initiated for violation of the Traffic Rules and for the provision of services that do not meet safety requirements.
