China added as much new solar power capacity in 2023 as the world did in 2022, as Beijing stepped up its bid to dominate the renewable energy market.
Renewable energy capacity grew globally last year, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said in a report. new report, driven mainly by China's huge expansion.
“The world's renewable electricity generation capacity is expanding faster than at any time in the last three decades,” the IEA said, noting that capacity has increased. by 50% globally in 2023.
China accounts for most of the growth. Part of the Gobi Desert is covered with solar panels. Last April, the first stages of a planned 450 gigawatt solar and wind system came online.
Xi Jinping, China's authoritarian president, has promised the country's CO2 emissions will peak by 2030, but a breakneck expansion of renewable energy means it could start falling as early as this year.
The second-largest economy world will account for almost 60% of new renewable capacity added globally by 2028, the IEA said.
The world will install more renewable capacity in the next five years than has been installed since since the first commercial power plant using renewable energy was built more than 100 years ago.”
Next year, the IEA expects the world to produce more energy from renewables than from coal, leading to to a symbolic shift in the energy system.
Other countries are trying to increase production of solar panels or solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. ), given their importance for increasing clean energy production.
However, the world is expected to struggle to break China's stranglehold on the market, which has been supported for years by heavy subsidies and cheap exports.
