Candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, deputy head of the scientific group at the Russian Quantum Center (RCC) Ilya Semerikov became a laureate of the national award in the field of future technologies “Challenge”. He was awarded the award in the «Perspective» category for the creation of an ion quantum processor using multi-level quantum systems — qudits. The award in the “Perspective” category is awarded to scientists under 35 years of age for a scientific achievement that has influenced the dynamics of the development of future technologies. The award ceremony took place on December 19, 2023.
The laureate considers it right to create a separate nomination for young scientists. “It’s easy to understand that a person has already succeeded and made a big discovery. But we need to support those who have not yet made their big discovery. Such scientists just need help to reach their big goal. Including through such moral and material support as a prize,” Ilya Semerikov told Kommersant.
“The award can help find like-minded people and get closer to the goal of turning a scientific discovery into a working technology,” says Ilya Semerikov. “We continue to work calmly. After the award, we have already managed to assemble a magnetic shield to increase the coherence time of the qubit. We hope that we will be able to bring our work to a device, to a useful quantum computer. But we understand well that this is still a very long odyssey. And such a prize supports us, as if telling us that we are moving in the right direction. In addition, the award helped me become a little more famous, and this can help me find new people to interact with and expand my circle of both scientific and human communication. Science is generally a story about collaboration.”
In addition, the Challenge Prize also solves the important task of popularizing scientific activity, Ilya believes: “I hope that such attention to the laureates will attract more young people to science and technology. In general, it seems to me that now science is becoming an increasingly important area of human life, that more and more technologies are penetrating into everyday life, but at the same time this is already perceived as everyday. For my part, I will also try to work and, to some extent, popularize our type of activity.”
The National Award in the field of future technologies “Challenge” is timed to coincide with the announced 2022 Decade of Science and Technology and aims to celebrate breakthrough ideas and inventions that change the landscape of modern science and the life of every person. The mission of the award is to create the desire of the younger generation to connect their lives with science and technology in our country. The founder of the prize is the Foundation for the Development of Scientific and Cultural Relations “Challenge” together with Gazprombank with the support of the Moscow government. The general partner of the award is the state corporation Rosatom.
