The exhibition “Fleet for besieged Leningrad” opened in Kronstadt

ST. PETERSBURG, January 18. The exhibition “Fleet for Siege Leningrad” opened on Thursday at the Museum of Naval Glory in the tourist and recreational cluster “Island of Forts” in Kronstadt, the correspondent reports.
The exhibition opened at the Museum of Naval Glory, a key object of the cultural and educational infrastructure of the “Island of Forts” tourist and recreational cluster.

“The Museum of Naval Glory opened relatively recently, but is already extremely popular among St. Petersburg residents, not only residents of Kronstadt. Kronstadt has become a real new point of attraction, and it would be impossible to imagine that an exhibition dedicated to the main historical event would not open here in the new museum 2024 – the 80th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the fascist blockade. Today we are celebrating the anniversary of the breaking of the blockade, and thereby starting a large number of events dedicated to the main date,” said Vice-Governor of St. Petersburg Boris Piotrovsky at the opening of the exhibition.

“From the first day, the Navy defended the Hero City of Leningrad and provided all possible assistance to lift the siege. Today is the 81st anniversary of the breaking of the siege of Leningrad… We have ahead of us the 80th anniversary of the complete liberation of Leningrad from the siege. We must remember our history “, we must teach our younger generation our heroic history. We must not forget it. We are in the Museum of Naval Glory, where this history is preserved, everything here is imbued with our military history,” said the head of the military-political department of the main command Russian Navy Dmitry Dzyuma.
The central theme of the exhibition was the role of naval formations in the history of the defense of Leningrad. It was in Kronstadt that the fleet of ships of the Baltic Fleet was concentrated in August 1941. They directly participated in the hostilities: with their artillery they held back the onslaught of fascist troops and conducted counter-battery warfare. Baltic Fleet submarines were active in the Gulf of Finland and sank many enemy ships and vessels. Many Baltic sailors fought ashore as infantrymen and made a great contribution to the defense of the city on the Neva.

< br />“When this exhibition was conceived, the main task was to talk about the role of the fleet in the breakthrough and liberation of Leningrad from the siege. And with the support of our colleagues, the scientific community, museums, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Defense, we managed to collect exhibits and graphic materials to display and reflect exactly the role of the fleet in breaking the blockade,” Konstantin Chamilovich, general director of the ANO “Island of Forts,” told reporters.

The exhibition is presented in seven thematic zones designed to reveal the role of the Navy in the events of one of the most heroic and at the same time tragic periods in the history of the Great Patriotic War. The exhibition space is divided into two key semantic blocks – “Front” and “Rear”. The stories of battles and military operations are reflected through thematic zones about naval and coastal artillery, combat divers, and the history of ships. The second block will talk about scientific and production support for the front. This is the story of the Road of Life – the only transport route that connected the city with the whole country, the theme of ship demagnetization technologies, scientific and technological developments of both pre-war and wartime, the emergence of which contributed to breaking the blockade, the history of the heroism of home front workers, ship repair yards and industries.

The exhibition presents various historical documents, the collection of which involved the largest archives of St. Petersburg – visitors will be able to study both known and recently declassified materials. A separate multimedia exhibition is dedicated to the thematic zone of sunken ships – unique video content will tell the heroic story of the combat crews who fought the enemy to the last. The exhibition features wall graphics, art objects, objects and video materials that will allow visitors to immerse themselves in the storylines of the exhibition.
The exhibition “Fleet for Siege Leningrad” was created with the participation of leading Russian naval and historical museums, state archives, and partner organizations involved in the preservation of naval heritage. Will be open within three months.
