MOSCOW, January 22Employees of the All-Russian Art Scientific and Restoration Center named after Grabar, the State Research Institute of Restoration, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum will help restore paintings after a fire in the Abkhaz State Art Gallery, Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova said in a telegram channel.
The fire that occurred on the night of January 21 destroyed almost the entire fund of the Abkhaz State Art Gallery, the vice-president of the republic, Badra Gunba, said earlier, specifying that this was a serious loss for the culture of Abkhazia. The Republic's Prosecutor General's Office is conducting an investigation into the fire to determine its cause. The director of the gallery, Suram Sakania, told the agency that more than 4 thousand paintings were stored in its building, which “if they didn’t burn, they would require restoration.”
“In the near future, a team from the Ministry of Culture will go to Sukhum, which will include representatives of the All-Russian Art Scientific and Restoration Center named after Grabar, the State Research Institute of Restoration, the Tretyakov Gallery and the Russian Museum,” wrote Lyubimova.
According to her, on-site specialists will examine the condition of the paintings and documents that were eventually removed from the fire in order to outline a plan for restoration work.
Lyubimova called the incident a “real humanitarian disaster” for her colleagues from Abkhazia.
