This represents a significant downgrade. the project's ambitions compared to what Apple hoped to achieve at the start of the project. At one stage, Apple planned to develop a car without a steering wheel or pedals.
According to Bloomberg, Apple's board of directors last year grilled CEO Tim Cook about car plans along with the head of its project division, Kevin Lynch.
Insiders are said to view the change in strategy as a key moment when the board Apple directors will most likely either give the go-ahead to ramp up plans to produce the car, or kill the project completely. The company has reportedly met with European automakers to discuss its plans.
Although the company has not built its own car, Apple is testing self-driving technology on the streets of California with a fleet of Lexus SUVs. . Last year, a total of 67 vehicles were registered with the California Department of Motor Vehicles.
For many years, the company also offered automotive software. Apple currently offers CarPlay, a hands-free car system that can connect to drivers' iPhones. The system is available on dozens of models, including BMW and Ford vehicles.
The impetus for vehicle development comes as Apple seeks new ways to grow. The company has struggled to create a consistently profitable and popular product of the size of the iPhone since its launch in 2007.

Mr. Ives said, “Artificial intelligence and new consumer devices are at the top of the priority list right now, not the Apple Car.”
