WASHINGTON, January 26 The US military believes that Russia and China are developing weapons to neutralize US satellites, often disguising their developments to avoid international condemnation, according to a report released on Thursday by the US Space Force, while Moscow has repeatedly pointed out the strengthening of the militarization of space by the US itself and proposed steps to curb this process.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov previously emphasized that the problem of militarization of outer space requires “close attention.” He noted that Russia considers the use of commercial satellites “for military purposes to interfere in the internal affairs of states and other subversive actions” by the United States and its allies a dangerous trend; Moscow calls for the use of space infrastructure exclusively in accordance with the provisions of the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The Russian Foreign Minister recalled that Moscow had put forward a number of constructive initiatives in this regard, in particular, jointly with China, proposing a draft Treaty on the Prevention of the Placement of Weapons in Outer Space and the Use of Force or Threats of Force against Space Objects.
«China and Russia believe that the United States is overly reliant on space in the context of maintaining our military and information dominance. In search of an asymmetric advantage in a future conflict, both countries are developing, testing and deploying weapons that are aimed at interfering with or destroying satellites and space services,» — states the report of the American military structure.
It claims that Moscow and Beijing often have to “disguise or conceal such developments to avoid international condemnation.”
In addition, the report claims that China is developing satellite inspection and repair systems that «can function as weapons.»
The US military recognizes that space-related technologies are now one of the most important factors in providing advantage on the battlefield, even when they remain invisible to those directly involved in military battles.
«Through satellites far above conventional battlefields, entities in space can collect, transmit and relay data critical to achieving a military advantage and expanding the scope of multi-domain warfare to even greater distances,” the report says.
Russia invites all countries of the world to accept obligations not to be the first to deploy weapons in space, Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergei Ryabkov previously stated. He noted that Moscow is satisfied that more than 30 states, including Russia, have officially supported this initiative, and expects that the circle of its participants will expand. At the same time, the diplomat emphasized that we are talking about ensuring that there are no strike-type weapons in space, “this is also aimed at by the Russian-Chinese draft treaty on the prevention of an arms race in outer space, which we continue to promote, despite the resistance of the United States and its vassals «. The Chinese Foreign Ministry also indicated that China is not interested in participating in the “space race” with any country and “resolutely opposes the weaponization of space and turning it into a battlefield.”
