The history of the Four Paws store chain began in 1992 with an important idea: to help people take proper care of their pets. At the end of 2023, the 500th anniversary store opened its doors in Moscow. Dmitry Tsypin, co-owner of Four Paws and member of the ClubFirst business community, spoke about how they managed to achieve such a scale, what the company sees as its mission and how the attitude towards animals has changed over 30 years.

About business growth
“The business began with the opening of one store in Zhukovsky, now we have 505 points, we are represented in 32 regions, while we have 8 fully functional veterinary centers, 27 grooming salons and 13 health rooms, and we continue to constantly develop,” says Dmitry . When asked how he managed to achieve such a scale, Dmitry replies that it is difficult to evaluate his own achievements, and he rather asks himself “why the company only has 500 points open, and not 5000.”
He attributes the success of the business to the right priorities: “The welfare and health of animals has always come first, and our main goal is to help pet parents properly care for their four-legged animals. We are not only talking about selling goods that our client needs, we are talking about performing an educational function: our team tells people how to better care for animals, how to properly monitor their health. We have maintained this focus for all 32 years,” says Dmitry.
The company pays a lot of attention to employee training: Four Paws has a corporate university. Dmitry says that it is important to constantly deepen employees’ knowledge about products and services that are necessary for pets — this way the team can successfully transfer knowledge to clients.

Regional expansion began about 15 years ago. When asked how they dealt with local competition, Dmitry replies that “competition is the greatest good that exists in the market, only competition forces players to develop, move forward and meet customers halfway.” In his opinion, the presence of competition in the region shows the development of a culture of caring for pets: if there are many pet stores in the city, then residents are accustomed to taking good care of animals, and entering the market may be easier.

Vetpharmacy «Four Paws»
Vetapteka «Four Paws»
«Four Paws» — a multidisciplinary business: in 2019 The first Pet Health Center opened, a large space that combined a store, a veterinary clinic, a grooming salon and an area for working with a dog handler. “We invite interesting speakers to the center who give lectures to customers about canine science and animal physiology, and we hold markets and exhibitions. This is a space for communication between the pet community,” explains Dmitry.
According to the businessman, health centers are a more labor-intensive area in terms of opening and investment. “But we understood that our client had a high level of trust in us, and it seemed right to offer them the service of a veterinary clinic. It’s convenient for customers to come to the store with their animal — we encourage this — and immediately sign up for a consultation or grooming.»
