KALINGRAD, March 15 A new genus and a new species of ancient wasp, which is “sealed” in Baltic amber, was found by Andranik, a researcher at the Kaliningrad Amber Museum Manukyan, the museum reports on its Telegram channel.
“An employee of the scientific department of the Amber Museum, candidate of biological sciences Andranik Manukyan discovered a new genus and species of an ancient wasp in a sample of Baltic amber from the museum collection,” the message says.
The new find in Baltic amber has been named Amberpoemenia, or “amber-poemenia wasp.” The genus was named by combining the English word amber (amber) with the Latin name of the subfamily — Amberpoemenia or «amber wasp-poemenia». The new species is named in honor of the outstanding Russian paleoentomologist and expert on “amber” faunas Alexander Georgievich Kireychuk (Zoological Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences, St. Petersburg).
«Research has shown that Amberpoemenia kirejtshuki was well adapted to living conditions in the amber forest and preyed on insects that fed on the wood of the amber tree,» the report says.
