ROME, March 22 The Russian pavilion at the 60th Venice Biennale will be occupied by artists from Bolivia and other Latin American countries, the Italian publication Il Giornale dell'Arte reported.
The curator of the South American pavilion in the Giardini Gardens will be the Minister of Culture, Decolonization and Depatriarchalization of Bolivia, Esperanza Guevara, and the commissioner will be Deputy Minister Juan Carlos Cordero Nina.
As the newspaper il Sole 24 Ore notes, Russia is skipping participation in the Venice Biennale for the second year in a row, this time its exhibition space, one of the largest at the exhibition, would remain empty. It will be occupied free of charge by 25 artists from South America, which became possible thanks to the warm relations between Russia and Bolivia. The exhibition project was called «Looking into the future past, we move forward.»
The Venice Biennale is one of the most famous art forums, an international art exhibition that is held every two years with the participation of an international jury. The Venice Biennale was founded in 1895. This year it will take place from April 20 to November 24.
The Russian Pavilion in the Biennale Gardens appeared in 1914, built according to the design of the architect Alexei Shchusev. Since then, the works of more than 800 Soviet and Russian artists have been presented there, among whom were Ilya Repin, Kazimir Malevich, Ilya Kabakov and others. In 2021, the pavilion was thoroughly restored.
