Rivian has temporarily stopped taking orders for the R1T pickup and R1S SUV

The American company is going to increase the productivity of its plant in Illinois by about 30%.

Rivian Automotive is one from a young American startup that develops and produces exclusively electric vehicles. Let us remember that Ford, Amazon and Cox Automotive initially invested in the company. To organize the assembly of electric cars, Rivian bought a former Mitsubishi Motors plant, the site is located in Normal (Illinois).

The brand’s current line includes a couple of models, we are talking about the Rivian R1T co-platform pickup truck and the R1S SUV. These electric cars debuted back in 2018, but only reached the production line in 2021. Now it has become known that the company has decided to temporarily suspend accepting individual orders for these models; the restriction will likely remain in effect for the next few months, at least until the end of summer. The exact date for the resumption of accepting orders has not yet been announced.

As it turned out, the suspension of the collection of applications from potential customers is related to the planned suspension of the plant in Illinois. It is reported that the company will spend most of this spring re-equipping this site; accordingly, pickup trucks and SUVs will not leave the assembly line at this time.

It is known that production at the Rivian plant will be suspended from April 5 to April 30 of this year. The company explained the need for technical re-equipment of the enterprise by the need to significantly reduce production costs. The company believes that these changes will ultimately improve the efficiency of the enterprise by about 30%.

According to rumors, Rivian is currently upgrading its R1 platform. It is expected that it will form the basis for the updated R1T and R1S, which may be presented this year. In addition, the media are predicting new top versions of the models, which will also differ due to more powerful electric power plants (more than 1000 hp, while the current flagship has 835 hp).

We would like to remind you that at the beginning of this month Rivian presented several new products at once — the R2 crossover, as well as a couple of new entry-level models – R3 and R3X. At the same time, the manufacturer announced that the starting price tag for the R2 would be about 45 thousand dollars, but you would have to wait another couple of years before the new product entered the market: it is possible that the cost by this time will be different.

As Kolesa.ru reported earlier, the start of production of Rivian R2 is scheduled for the first half of 2026, R3 and R3X will go on the assembly line later. New items will be produced at the same plant in Illinois, which will soon be sent for refurbishment. It is known that American dealers are now already accepting pre-orders for the crossover.
