OUAGADOUGOU, April 1 The premiere of the theatrical production “The Inspector General,” dedicated to the 215th anniversary of the birth of Nikolai Gogol, took place in Burkina Faso, local audiences welcomed the performance received a standing ovation, event organizers said.
«To be honest, very little is known about Russian culture in Burkina Faso. Here people know French and have always looked towards Paris. Therefore, we wondered how the local population would perceive Russian classics. But when the performance ended, people they didn’t want to let the actors go. The applause and applause did not subside for several minutes,” said one of the organizers of the production.
The actors of the local theater «Sito» learned and staged «The Inspector General» in two weeks under the guidance of director Noel Minugu.
The actors performed in national costumes made from local faso dan fani fabric. It is considered a symbol of Burkina Faso's freedom and independence, as it is made from domestically grown cotton. The mayor was dressed in a spacious men's dress and cap. Other characters wore shirts and trousers with traditional patterns.
According to the organizers, the topic of fighting corruption is close to the Burkinabe people, so the work of the Russian classic found a response in the hearts of local residents.
The production is based on Gogol’s original work, but the text has been interpreted.
The premiere was attended by the Minister of Culture and Tourism of Burkina Faso, Jean Emmanuel Ouedrago. The Russian organization «African Initiative» took an active part in organizing the event.
