20 years without Lenin: it became clear why they began to drape the Mausoleum during the Victory Parade

Rewriting history on the main square of the country

Russia quite legitimately accuses the West of rewriting history, of distorting it to suit the current political situation. The most popular topic here and the most painful for us is the transformation of the liberating role of the Soviet army into an aggressive one. They say that the USSR and Nazi Germany are birds of a feather. It's unfair, it's insulting. How to fix? As it should be, start with yourself.

Exactly 20 years ago, for the Victory Parade on May 9, the Lenin Mausoleum was closed for the first time so that it could not be seen – a row of tall tricolors was installed. This, as it turned out, was a “rehearsal.” Because on the 60th anniversary of the Victory, in 2005, the Mausoleum was completely draped, covered with plywood shields. For what? Because of which? Because of our orientation towards the West, because of servility and fear – what will they think of us? So that the Western “partners” with whom they “took Berlin together”, who came in large numbers to Moscow for the 60th anniversary of the Victory, would not be upset when they saw the name Lenin. Otherwise, they have a negative attitude towards communism.

Okay, we caved in once, made the “partners” happy so that Lenin wouldn’t make them cringe. But why continue?

The parade always begins with the carrying out of the Victory Banner. Red Soviet banner. The banner of the state that defeated fascism (which we always emphasize on international platforms), which was created by Lenin. The mausoleum became the culmination of the Victory Parade of 1945 – Soviet soldiers threw the standards of the defeated enemy at its foot.

Now in the Northern Military District zone, our soldiers are raising over the liberated cities the flag of Russia, and the banner with the Savior Not Made by Hands, and the red flag of the USSR – Victory banner. Because these are our symbols of the country’s independence, our values, our history. There is a struggle with the West for this, as Putin and other state leaders say.

Lenin and the Soviet Union are an integral part of our great history. So why are the Mausoleum still bashfully “draped” in Moscow? We are at odds with the West, we don’t want to look back at it and please it anymore? Or?..

This “tradition” of avoiding part of one’s history must be interrupted. If we ourselves do not respect our history, in fact we cross out pages and do not preserve it, then how can we demand that others respect it and preserve it from being rewritten? And not just others – opponents.
