Top-level athletes are leaving the best coach in Russian skiing, Yuri Borodavko. Recently — minus Natalya Terentyeva (nee Nepryaeva), Alexander Terentyev and Daria Nepryaeva. The first is an Olympic champion. The second is a two-time medalist of the Games. The third is one of the most promising young skiers in Russia.
What is the reason?
Yuri Borodavko has always been distinguished by his authoritarianism. It’s hard to believe this if you talk to him about abstract topics. A man of the kindest soul. But there are no concessions at work. No one. Olympic champion, World Cup winner, and even the king of Norway. No difference.
Not everyone can handle it. Especially if you are 21 years old, and your perception of reality has not yet escaped from your youthful state. Someone can step on their ego and plow, fulfilling all the demands of the coach. And some people climb the barricades when they are young. Cannot calm the hypertrophied “I”.
Yulia Stupak did not last even a season with Borodavko. After Markus Kramer left in 2022, she moved to the group with Yuri Viktorovich, but then went to train in Italy, and then completely moved under the leadership of Yegor Sorin. Yes, no one began to reveal the details of such a hasty breakup in the following spring, but you can read between the lines.
«
“(Training) as much as you need is the most difficult thing,” Stupak later said in the show “In Two Words.” “You can always do more. 1% of people do it perfectly. We have such people. If you take the best skiers of our country. Let’s say those who train with Yuri Viktorovich (Borodavko) are perfect — it’s about plowing. But I’ve seen dozens of people who didn’t have that much health. Take a little bit away from them, and they’ll run differently.”< br>
Here is the second point. Let's call it the code word «Plowing». Judging by the results of Alexander Terentyev, this season it did not benefit him. And the skier just stood up. Plus health problems. As a result, a decision was made about the need for change. And subsequent departure to Sorin. Will this help him regain his lost sprinting qualities? We'll see you next winter.
The Decembrist's wife
Natalya Terentyeva is expecting a child. Her departure from Wart is probably not about sports. Now she and Alexander are connected by much more than just a romantic relationship. By the way, Natalya, like Alexander Bolshunov, is talking about the above-mentioned plowing. Borodavko’s methods suited her perfectly. And there are great doubts whether, under the leadership of Sorin, it will be able to return to its previous level.
«
“It so happened that there are circumstances in our lives that contributed to the decision to make such changes,” Terentyeva noted. “We see our further development in Yegor Vladimirovich’s group, we are looking forward to preparing for the next season in order to delight the fans with our performances”
What can Yegor Sorin give? A trainer of a different format. Emphasis on speed training, different balance of loads. Although there are not fewer of them at all! Until 2018, he worked as Kramer's assistant. And it was that period that became the foundation of his coaching career. Perhaps this is precisely what pushed Stupak or the same Sergei Ustyugov to switch to Sorin. But! Neither one nor the other succeeded.
Is it sincere thanks?
It’s one thing to sculpt talent with your own hands. Veronika Stepanova, Anastasia Faleeva, Savely Korostelev, young and promising. It’s another thing to work with older and accomplished skiers. With whom you need to be able to build a dialogue. Find balance in communication. Forget about the “superior-subordinate” scheme. Will Sorin get along with the same Terentyeva? We hope.
«
“We would like to clarify a little the issue of our transition to Yegor Sorin’s group: the decision was not spontaneous, we discussed it with Yuri Viktorovich. We are sincerely grateful to him for raising us, making us who we are now,” Terentyeva said.
How does Wart himself perceive what is happening? It's very calm. He doesn't hold anyone back. He showed that his methods produce results. He led his athletes to some of the greatest achievements in modern cross-country skiing. And he deserves respect. To summarize, I would like to cite the words recently spoken by Olympic champion gymnast Nikita Nagorny.
“
“I never understood those athletes who became promising or already champions and said that “the coach is bad, I’ll go to another.» They (trainers) put family in second place, to train you every day, to give their lives to you, so that you become champions. And you just at the moment: “I don’t want, I don’t have the strength, I’m tired.”< br>
