The level of citizens’ trust in the Russian Academy of Sciences has increased over the past two years by 4 percent. Today, more than 71% of respondents, according to VTsIOM, support the initiatives of the Academy. This was announced on Wednesday during a speech at a plenary meeting of the Federation Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences by the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Krasnikov.

He spoke about the new principles of expert activity and scientific and methodological leadership of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In particular, he noted that many of the studies that until recently were carried out in institutes and universities do not meet the requirements of the challenges that the country faces today. From now on, the RAS will approve a scientific research program for each institute and university in accordance with their declared topics. And not just approve, but monitor the implementation of these decisions on an ongoing basis.
According to Krasnikov, it is planned to approach the topics of government assignments in a new way: “Where there is a big competition (sometimes there are 50 institutes on one topic), we will make a rating: the first (leading) three remain on this topic, and the rest are allocated others tasks, according to their names.”
Special control is also established over the quality of scientific research. If previously the high ranking of institutions was determined by publications in scientific journals, now we will be talking about the real demand for research, without publication activity. Gennady Krasnikov said that soon, together with large companies, the Academy will create a bank of popular scientific research.
According to the speaker, the RAS is closely monitoring public opinion. Thus, from 2022 to 2024, citizens’ trust in the Academy increased by 4%. It is supported by more than 71% of respondents. Also, according to VTsIOM, 65% of Russian parents want their children to find work in the field of science. “We see that there is a demand in society for science, which is the basis of the country’s technological development and its independence,” Krasnikov concluded.
