MOSCOW, April 28The European Space Agency (ESA) published images of the surface of Mars, in which you can see formations similar to “creepy spiders,” writes the Science Alert portal.
“Of course, these are not real living arachnids; rather, , «are dark, thin formations on the Martian surface, formed entirely as a result of non-biological processes,» the article says.
These formations are called «spiders» because of their external similarity: a dark spot in the center, surrounded by thin stripes diverging in all sides. As Science Alert notes, these «spiders» on the surface of Mars are formed as a result of seasonal changes on the planet, when extreme temperatures give way to warming.
Under the influence of the sun, carbon dioxide ice takes on a gaseous form: it bursts out as geysers through cracks and then settles on the surface. As a result of this process, spider-like patterns are formed under the ice.
At the same time, as Science Alert notes, most of the “spiders” in the photographs published by ESA are noticeable in the territory of the Martian “Inca city” — a strange formation on the surface of the planet, so named because of its external resemblance to ancient ruins in Peru.
