Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry named after. N.S. Kurnakov RAS, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, began work on the creation of a virtual museum of chemistry within the framework of the federal project “Popularization of Science and Technology” and the “Working with Experience” initiative of the Decade of Science and Technology. Member of the Scientific Committee of the Challenge Prize Alexey Paevsky headed the creative team creating content for this museum.

Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry named after. N.S. Kurnakov RAS is the oldest chemical institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It begins its history with the creation by M.V. Lomonosov in 1748 of the Chemical Laboratory of the Academy of Sciences. To mark the anniversary of the laboratory in 2023, the Institute of General Economy of the Russian Academy of Sciences published the book “275 years of chemical science in Russia” (Authors: V.K. Ivanov, A.S. Paevsky, Yu.A. Zolotov). When preparing the book, its authors became convinced that materials on the history of Russian chemical science are often difficult to access, and some of its episodes remain practically unknown.
To make the history of the development of chemical science in the country more open, it was decided to create a virtual museum of chemistry. As in the book, in the museum it will be possible to trace the development of scientific schools created by brilliant Russian chemists, as well as the development of all chemical science in our country. The scientific director of the project is the director of the Institute of General Economy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Ivanov. The head of the press service of the Federal Research Center for Problems of Chemical Physics and Medicinal Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, curator of the initiative “Working with Experience” and member of the scientific committee of the national scientific award “Challenge” Alexey Paevsky is responsible for the content of the site.
“ Our project is only in the initial stage of development, and the work here will last for more than one year, but as a result we want to create a large-scale picture of the development of chemistry not only in Russia, but also in the world, since any scientific discipline is a planetary phenomenon,” commented the editor-in-chief of the virtual Museum of Chemistry Alexey Paevsky.
The exposition of the virtual museum of chemistry will include various sections:
- biographies of outstanding chemists of Russia and the world;
- history of the discovery and study of individual substances;
- new popular library chemical elements;
- history of chemistry on the map of Russia (reports from chemical and science museums, house museums of outstanding chemists);
- history of the country's chemical institutes;
- chemical everyday life (history of chemical vessels, instruments and devices, principles of their operation and use in a modern laboratory).
It is also planned to create a “chemical” layer on Yandex maps with marking of memorable places related to chemistry.
At the beginning In June, the museum team plans to release a full-fledged guide to the museum’s website, but starting from May 6, certain materials will already be posted in the public domain. You can monitor the replenishment of the museum’s collection in public pages on VK and Telegram.
