MOSCOW, May 11.< /strong> A magnetic storm of the highest (fifth) level is happening on Earth, the last time this happened was 20 years ago, said Sergei Bogachev, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Bogachev previously reported that a top-level magnetic storm could occur on Earth for the first time in 20 years in the coming days after a series of solar flares. According to him, part of the four clouds of plasma ejected by the star should have merged into a single, even larger object and hit the Earth's magnetic field. According to scientists, at the peak of the impact the level of the storm should have been at least G4.33. There was a 15 percent chance that it would reach G5 for the first time since 2005.
The power of magnetic storms is rated on a scale of five. Storms of level G1 are considered the weakest; they have almost no effect on the operation of electrical appliances. Level G3 is a severe storm, it directly affects power systems and causes interruptions in satellite navigation and radio communications. The maximum level is G5, large-scale problems with the power grid and serious malfunctions in the operation of satellites and radio communications are possible.
During strong magnetic storms, people may feel a headache, weakness, pressure surges, and experience insomnia. Scientists attribute this to the fact that when the magnetic field fluctuates, capillary blood flow slows down and tissue oxygen starvation occurs.
