At the end of last week, the Chinese company Chery held a large corporate presentation and showed several new products, including the new TJ-1 compact crossover with a plug-in hybrid powertrain that can be offered under various subbrands.
Chery hasn't had enough of its multi-brand strategy yet: existing sub-brands Exeed, Jetour, Kaiyi and Omoda will soon be joined by Sterra, iCar and Jaecoo. New brands are created with an eye on the intensive development of the market for electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. Until recently, Chery did not do very well with electric trains: the company has mastered the junior segment of budget urban electric vehicles quite well, but so far it is almost not represented in the older segments. Chery's only electric crossover designed from scratch, known as the eQ5/eQ7, is selling poorly. Now the company is preparing a big electric turn: the premium sub-brand Sterra (currently under the wing of Exeed), the electric car brand iCar (grew from the sub-brand of the same name) and the export brand Jaecoo with an off-road flair have been announced.

The new compact crossover in question was previously announced under the Jaecoo and Chery brands, it arrived at the first public show as the Chery TJ-1, while there are no traditional Chery emblems on it, there are only large Chery inscriptions on the stern and radiator grill . «Grill» has a simple rectangular shape, so if desired, it can be re-registered under any of the subsidiary brands — it is possible that it will come to the Russian Federation, for example, like Omoda or Jetour. The TJ-1 index is also conditional so far — back in March, Chery launched a public campaign in China to choose a commercial name for the new product, the results will be announced soon.
jpg» />Overall length Chery TJ-1 — 4515 mm, width — 1865 mm, height — 1680 mm, wheelbase — 2675 mm. Chery TJ-1 will be one of the first carriers of the new C-DM (Chery Dual Mode) hybrid architecture, which will consist of highly integrated (read: light and cheap to manufacture) power modules based on 1.5- and 2.0-liter gasoline engines operating on the Miller cycle and having a thermal efficiency of more than 44.5%. The new hybrids will be able to drive up to 165 km on electric traction with a fully charged battery and will have excellent dynamics – for all-wheel drive versions, acceleration to “hundreds” is claimed in 4.26 seconds. The claimed output of the 1.5-liter “turbo engine” from the fifth generation Acteco family is 115 kW (156 hp) and 220 Nm.
Chinese media reports that Chery TJ-1 will also be available with on-duty «hydrocarbon» power plants, in particular with a 1.6-liter gasoline turbo engine paired with a 7-speed «automatic» type DCT (double clutch). For hybrids, we have developed our own line of transmissions of various types, details will be announced as new products enter the market. p> There are no high-quality pictures of the Chery TJ-1 interior yet, but there is nothing special to consider here — modern minimalism, a simple front panel with instrument and multimedia screens, almost complete absence of physical keys and a high “two-story” central tunnel with a wide wireless charging shelf for two smartphones.
The full premiere of Chery TJ-1 is expected in the summer, then it will probably be it is clear where and under what brands this crossover will appear outside of China.
