The new Hyundai SUV was leaked by the Chinese Ministry of Industry back in February, then there were spy photos of cars caught in the wild. However, the brand itself nevertheless decided to intrigue at first and presented an “off-road” concept in March. And now branded images of the serial model have been published. As you might guess, the crossover is intended primarily for China, its production will be handled by the local JV Beijing Hyundai. The model was called Mufasa. By the way, this is the name of the lion from the Disney cartoon, Simba's father.
Chinese specialized media believe that Mufasa will replace the Hyundai ix35 cross-country, which is still produced and sold in China: the local “thirty-fifth” passed into the second generation in 2017, it experienced a large-scale restyling at the end of 2020. In terms of length (4475 mm) and height (1665 mm), the new SUV is inferior to the current ix35 (4500 and 1710 mm, respectively), the width (1850 mm) of the cars is the same. The wheelbase of the Hyundai Mufasa is 2680 mm versus 2640 mm for the Hyundai ix35.
The fresh crossover has an unusual appearance, it got vertical headlights, embossed Tucson-style sides, massive grille and bumpers. And the taillights were made in the form of an oval frame. We saw the interior in paparazzi pictures, inside — a truncated steering wheel, a push-button control instead of the usual gear lever and a scoreboard, that is, a virtual tidy and a multimedia system screen hidden under one glass.

The engine in the documents of the certification body was one — a gasoline «aspirated» 2.0 with a capacity of 160 hp. At the same time, some Chinese media still tipped the Hyundai Mufasa 48-volt appendage, but it is not yet clear whether this version will become an addition to the “traditional” crossover or whether the electrified version will be the only one. Hyundai ix35 is equipped with the same naturally aspirated two-liter engine (without weight), it also comes with a 140-horsepower «turbo» 1.4 T-GDI. The 2.0 engine is combined with a classic six-speed «automatic», a seven-speed robotic box is put on the turbo engine. The ix35 has only front-wheel drive, the Mufasa will most likely not have all-wheel drive either. >The new SUV will make its public premiere at the Shanghai Motor Show, which opens next week. There is no word yet on Hyundai's plans to sell the Mufasa outside of China. However, later one of the Russian dealers may well decide to bring this SUV under the parallel import scheme.
