BYD is gearing up to launch the Seagull junior electric hatchback, its premiere will take place next week as part of the Shanghai Auto Show, but already known
Recently, we have been paying a lot of attention to the novelties of the Chinese company BYD, because last year it ranked second in the world in sales of passenger electric vehicles after Tesla ( according to the companies themselves, 911,140 and 1,313,851 units were sold, respectively) and, taking into account the growth dynamics (+184% compared to sales of electric vehicles in 2021), it has every chance to become the world leader in the EV segment this year. In January-February 2023, BYD has already overtaken Tesla: according to the CleanTechnica resource, companies have sold 328,098 and 221,882 electric vehicles in the world, respectively.

BYD is rapidly expanding its lineup with the launch of the premium F-Brand and luxury brand Yangwang this year, and several budget new products will enter the market under the parent brand BYD, including the upgraded BYD e2 electric compact hatchback and the BYD Seagull junior subcompact hatchback, both belong to the so-called oceanic line, united by a common style, a modular «cart» e-platform 3.0 and thematic names: Seagull means «Seagull» in English.
Seagull will be the most affordable modern BYD model, but at the same time it does not encroach on the territory of the ultra-cheap and very popular urban electric car Wuling Hongguang Mini EV in China, but is positioned as a full-fledged passenger model with a fairly spacious interior, high-quality finishes and good equipment (all wheels, for example equipped with disc brakes). Overall length BYD Seagull — 3780 mm, width — 1715 mm, height — 1540 mm, wheelbase — 2500 mm. Stock wheels — 15- or 16-inch.

The space in the Seagull's cabin is provided by a fairly large wheelbase for its class (for comparison, let's say that the Lada Granta has a wheelbase of 2476 mm) and an almost one-volume profile with a windshield that is strongly shifted forward. The rear seat is strictly double. The wave-shaped front panel is designed in the spirit of the older «brothers» BYD e2 and BYD Dolphin, the instrument screen has a diagonal of 5 inches, multimedia — 12.8 inches. The mode selector of the power plant is made in the form of a drum, it is located on the left in the row of buttons on the center console. On the top floor of the two-story central tunnel, there is a shelf with wireless charging for a smartphone. The floor around the rear seats is completely flat.
Seagull will be equipped with a single electric motor on the front axle, its power is 55 kW (75 hp) or 75 kW (102 hp), depending on the modification. There are also two batteries to choose from: the younger sodium-ion with a capacity of 30.08 kWh will allow you to drive 305 km on a single charge through the CLTC cycle, the older lithium-iron phosphate with a capacity of 38.88 kWh — 405 km. By the way, sodium-ion batteries have become very popular in China over the past couple of years: they have a lower charge density compared to lithium, but are relatively cheap to manufacture and show stable performance over a wide temperature range — such batteries are quite suitable for inexpensive electric vehicles.< br />
The BYD Seagull will hit the home market in the coming months, with an expected price range of 80,000 to 100,000 yuan (from 954,000 to 1,193,000 rubles in translation at the current exchange rate). The chances of the appearance of «The Seagull» outside of China (for example, in Europe) are very high. Unfortunately, the BYD brand is not officially represented in Russia at the moment.
