Greg Hands caught red-handed with notes on his palm

The Conservative Party Chairman wrote on his arms before taking part in an interview as part of his broadcast on Sunday.

Greg Hands appeared on the BBC's Sunday program and Laura Kuensberg showed a short scribbled list on her left palm.

Mr Hands did not appear to have had any writing on his hand in a previous interview with Sky News or during a subsequent appearance on GB News's The Camilla Tomini Show.

Posting a screenshot of the captions after the program aired, the Tory Chairman joked: «My handy reminder that Labor left us 'no money'!»

This followed Hands constantly referring in social media posts to the infamous letter sent after the 2010 election by former Labor Party leader Liam Byrne, which said: “Dear Chief Secretary, I am afraid there is no money. Best wishes and good luck!»

He posted photos of a copy of the letter used as a potato chip cone in a fish restaurant in the trunk of a Tory activist along with various flyers, and photoshopped an election banner.

< p> The inscription on his palm caused ridicule from commentators and opposition politicians. Carl Turner, Labor MP for East Hull, tweeted:

Why does Gregory have to take notes on his hands? Remind yourself of the lies HQ is instructing the Tories to vomit in defense of this useless, horrendous government record? #GeneralElectionNow @GregHands @Conservatives pic.twitter.com/njsVw9lPt9

In an interview with the BBC, Mr Hands insisted the government has growth records «to be proud of» despite recent data from the Office for National Statistics showing the economy flat in February.

“We are still working very hard to fulfill all of [Rishi Sunak's] five priorities,” he said. “Inflation halving, economic growth, debt reduction, court closures and reduced waiting times in hospitals.”

“In February, it was not the best result, but in January the growth was 0.3%. And we had the best growth in the G7 in 2021 and 2022.”

However, he further admitted: “We would like to see much stronger growth.”

He also suggested that poll experts' warnings that the Tories could lose more than 1,000 seats in next month's local elections were accurate, calling the prediction «independent predictions from the most reliable academic sources.»

Question: Sky News why it thought the people should vote Conservative, he replied, “I think the government as a whole is doing what the people want us to do. No one pretends that this work is in any way easy.”
