Tottenham Hotspur put Julian Nagelsmann in first place out of four men to take over as head coach.
The Premier League club, however, hit a major stumbling block in bringing in Nagelsmann as he proved to be a very expensive option.
< p>It is understood that Nagelsmann's contract with Bayern Munich did not include a termination clause, which continues to pay his €12m (£10.6m) annual salary despite being sacked in March.
< p>Nagelsmann has more than three years left before the five-year contract he signed to join Bayern from RB Leipzig in 2021, and is effectively on gardening leave.
Bayern are entitled to compensation if the 36-year-old moves to another club this season. Yes, and Naglesmann himself will expect compensation from Bayern if they terminate his contract before it expires.
So far, this is too expensive for the Spurs. There is a limit to what they will pay Nagelsmann to make up for the money he will lose on his Bayern deal, which will likely hit them.
Nagelsmann is undeniably top of the Spurs' wanted list. He was targeted after the departure of Antonio Conte, but it looked like Spurs would miss the opportunity when Nagelsmann was in talks with Chelsea following the sacking of Graham Potter.
However, Nagelsmann withdrew from the competition last week in order to to become Chelsea manager and Mauricio Pochettino, whom Spurs have not contacted, should be appointed in the next few days.
The Spurs are under pressure to bring in a top-notch coach. a coach who will become the 12th permanent manager in 22 years under Daniel Levy's chairmanship, but will have to make some compromises on the financial commitment needed to bring on Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann is presumed to be interested in the job, with Ryan Mason in charge until the end of the season following the sacking of interim coach Christian Stellini, but the Spurs are hoping there will be a significant compromise. Mason, 31, is on his second term and has already expressed interest in taking on the job.
However, given the circumstances under which Nagelsmann abruptly left Bayern, it looks like he will continue to press his case. paid in full until the conclusion of the settlement agreement. For their part, Bayern may continue to pay Nagelsmann his salary, but hope that he will seek a deal to get a new job and does not want to be out of work.
It is not clear who the other three managers are on the shortlist spurs. There has been interest in Celtic's Ange Postecoglu, who is likely to be a candidate, former Barcelona manager Luis Enrique and Brighton's Roberto De Zerbi, although he will be difficult to attract.
Arne Slot, who set to win the Dutch League with Feyenoord on a small budget, Ajax and whose team plays exciting football, is also likely to be on the list.
