Volvo Cars, owned by the Chinese holding company Geely, has scheduled the world premiere of the junior EX30 electric crossover for June 7, it should help double the increase global sales of the Swedish brand.
By the middle of this decade, Volvo Cars wants to reach an annual sales level of 1.2 million cars, for which it is building a new plant with a capacity of 250,000 cars a year in the Slovak city of Kosice. Meanwhile, at the end of last year, against the backdrop of well-known geopolitical events and a global shortage of microchips, Volvo sales in the world decreased by 12% (compared to sales in 2021) to 615,121 units. The January-April results are encouraging: sales increased by 10% to 214,914 units, but the targets are still far away — the company needs a new mass and very successful model.
New official teaser for Volvo EX30
Now the youngest model in Volvo's range is the XC40 compact crossover, which is offered both as a «hydrocarbon» power plant and as an electric car, but in the Volvo sales rankings it is second only to the mid-size XC60. Considering that the XC40 has been produced since 2017 and despite regular updates cannot become the brand's bestseller, it can be argued that its market potential has reached the ceiling. Volvo's biggest hit in the coming years should be the EX30 subcompact electric crossover.
Rumors about a new younger Volvo SUV have been circulating for several years, but the Swedish brand officially announced it only in November last year, and today the premiere date has been set — June 7th. Simultaneously with the official press release, the Chinese media circulated patent images of the Volvo EX30, meaningless teasers with shadows and fragments of the novelty.

Chinese colleagues add that the Volvo EX30 will be based on Geely's SEA (Sustainable Experience Architecture) modular platform, that is, the EX30 will be technically linked to the new smart and Zeekr X models. The design of the EX30, of course, will be its own, in the spirit of Swedish minimalism. The front, as can be seen from the patent images, is designed in the style of the new flagship EX90 crossover, but there are also original details — for example, embossed wheel arches that cut into the hood and taillights combined into a rectangular frame.
Volvo EX30 will be produced in China, although in the future it cannot be excluded that it will be built in Europe, including at the aforementioned new plant in Slovakia ( its launch is scheduled for 2026). The Volvo EX30 is expected to be very attractively priced, without having to pay in full, as it is with this model that Volvo will be particularly active in promoting a subscription with a flexible rate, so that young and not very wealthy people can become customers of the brand. The range is likely to include single-engine rear-wheel drive and twin-engine all-wheel drive versions with performance levels on par with the aforementioned smart and Zeekr X models, the top versions of which have 315 kW (428 hp).
