WASHINGTON, January 8 NASA commented on the problems with the Peregrine lunar module, recalling that failure is also an incentive for growth and development, the American space agency announced this on its social network account X.
“Every success or failure is an opportunity to learn something new and move forward. We use this lesson to advance our achievements in science, exploration and commercial development of the Moon,” said NASA Deputy Administrator Joel Kearns in connection with the Peregrine lander emergency. The department repeated data from the Astrobotic company that there was a failure in the propulsion system of the device, which prevented its orientation to the Sun. “The company is assessing the situation and will provide information as it becomes available,” NASA’s press service said.
Peregrine launched into space Monday morning on a next-generation Vulcan launch vehicle. Astrobotic reported problems about eight hours after launch. In addition to NASA instruments, on board the device there is a ritual cargo with capsules of human ashes from the Celestis company, a stone from Everest, as well as “parcels” from a number of other international partners of the mission.
Astrobotic built the Peregrine lander under a contract with NASA, but formally NASA is only the customer of the service for delivery to the Moon — the spacecraft itself does not belong to the agency. It is expected that in the future Peregrine could be used on missions of NASA's Artemis lunar program.
During its first test mission, five NASA research instruments intended to study the Moon were to be delivered to the Moon. Initially, it was planned that NASA could send twice as many of its equipment on it, but in the fall the agency abandoned this, reducing their number to five due to fears of possible mission failure.
