The coronavirus pandemic, the Black Live Matter movement and Marcus Rashford’s campaign to end child food poverty were among the British public’s most discussed topics on Twitter this year.
Posts linked to the pandemic, lockdown and protecting the NHS occupied seven places in the top 10 of 2020, the platform revealed today as part of its annual round-up.
Rashford was the only account to feature twice in Twitter’s list, with his campaign to end child food poverty among the platform’s most discussed topics, according to UK-specific data released by the company.
The 23-year-old, who plays for Manchester United, has spent the year campaigning against child hunger in the UK which led to a Government U-turn over school meal vouchers.

The Black Lives Matter movement and the death of George Floyd were also prominent, with the subject taking up two of the remaining three most popular UK hashtags, with #loveisland — used for discussion around the ITV dating show — completing the top 10.
But according to Twitter, the announcement of Black Panther star Boseman’s death on his official Twitter page in August was the most retweeted post of the year in the UK, as well as the most liked tweet.
The shock announcement from the actor’s family revealed he had battled colon cancer for four years, working through the period while also receiving treatment.

It was followed on the most popular retweets list by former Love Island star Dr Alex George calling for hospital car parks to be made free for NHS staff and Manchester United striker Rashford’s open letter to MPs about child poverty.
Rashford was also the top most discussed athlete on the platform, with his current home Manchester United the most discussed team.
French footballers Paul Pogba and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang also featured in the top five athletes, along with Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The most talked about TV shows included Good Morning Britain, Love Island and Channel 4 News while the most discussed film in the UK was The Avengers: Endgame followed by Black Panther.
Twitter also released a list of the site’s most popular tweets about working from home which was topped by BBC weatherman Owain Wyn Evans playing the channel’s news theme tune on his drums at home which was liked almost 189,000 times.

As working from home became a new reality for many across the country, the platform logged around 1.8 million unique tweets featuring the phrase, most including comedic takes on the new phenomenon including a man trying to replicate his commute using his shower.
The list of 2020 most talked about people on the platform was dominated by British and American politicians, although South Korean boy-band BTS took third place above both Joe Biden and Jeremy Corbyn.
The end of year lists act as a slice of light relief for the platform which has spent the year embroiled in scandals about US election disinformation, with CEO Jack Dorsey testifying in front of the Senate about political bias and the suppression of a New York Post article about Biden’s son.
