Nottingham Forest and Rangers have agreed terms for the Premier League club to appoint Ross Wilson, who has served as sporting director for the Glasgow-based club since 2019.
Expected 39 -year-old Wilson will soon agree on his personal terms with Forest. His role at the club is likely to be wider than that of former sporting director Filippo Giraldi, who abruptly left the City Ground last week, only joining after a summer transfer window of 22 signings.
Giraldi has only been responsible for first-team recruitment at Forest, while the club has far more trouble than that with a whirlwind move into Premier League football after a play-off promotion was secured last summer. The club's infrastructure has suffered in the 23 years of absence from the Premier League and although the team is currently in the relegation places, there is still a lot of work to be done to one day become a recognized member of the top flight.
Forest is part of the same group of owners as Olympiakos, which is also owned by Greek billionaire Evangelos Marinakis. There is currently only a temporary relationship between the two clubs. Since being promoted last summer, there have been big changes at Forest when head of human resources George Sirianos and chief scout Andy Scott left after the transfer window. Chief Executive Dane Murphy left in January. Giraldi's departure followed seven more signings in the same month.
Steve Cooper, who led the club to promotion, is a fan favorite and was awarded a new contract in October amid questions about his future. Wilson has a long track record as a sporting director, having worked at Falkirk, Huddersfield Town, Watford and in the Premier League with Southampton.
At Rangers, he played a key role in creating the team that won the historic 55th place. championship title in 2021 under Steven Gerrard. He appointed Giovanni van Bronkhorst as his successor when Gerrard left for Aston Villa in November 2021, and then Michael Beal earlier this season after van Bronkhorst was sacked. In May last year, the club reached the final of the Europa League.
