A record from the summer of 2021 indicates that Mr. Trump understood that he kept classified materials after leaving the White House, reported by the cable network. .
The former president's remarks on the tape suggest that he would like to share information, but he is aware of the limitations of his ability to declassify the tapes after leaving office.
CNN didn't listen to the tape, but cited several unidentified sources describing it.
Such a tape could potentially heighten Mr. Trump's legal danger in a federal investigation into his handling of dozens of classified documents as he seeks to become president again in 2024.
The Justice Department is investigating whether Mr. Trump, 76, actually broke the law by deleting government documents, including several marked «top secret,» and delivering them to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida after leaving office.
According to CNN, this is a recording of a July 2021 meeting held at Mr. Trump's Golf Club in Bedminster, New Jersey. It included two people who were working on the autobiography of former Trump administration chief Mark Meadows, as well as several Trump aides.
Mr. Meadows' autobiography includes an account of what appears to be the same meeting during which Mr. Trump described in a four-page report by America's top general, Mark Milley.
The autobiography describes General Milley's possible plan for an attack on Iran, including the deployment of massive numbers of US troops.
The document Trump refers to in the tape was not prepared by General Milley, CNN was told. One source told the network that Mr. Trump is addressing the document as if it were in front of him.
The footage suggests prosecutors are conducting a deeper investigation into Mr. Trump's handling of classified documents than previously known.
The FBI raided Mar-a-Lago last August and found at least 300 classified documents, including US secrets, that may have come from human spies.
It was later reported that classified information about the Iranian missile program was among the files recovered by the FBI.
Mr. Trump denies wrongdoing, arguing that he has declassified all documents in his possession. Mr. Trump said the president could declassify information «even if he thought about it.»
Stephen Cheung, a spokesman for the Trump campaign, declined to comment on reports of the recording but said «leaks» from a federal investigation were intended to «stir up tensions.»
«The leaks from the radical supporters behind this political persecution are meant to stir up tensions and continue media harassment of President Trump and his supporters.»
Peter Carr, a spokesman for Jack Smith's office of Special Counsel at the Justice Department, declined to comment.
Mr. Smith's investigation includes whether Mr. Trump or his associates obstructed the Justice Department's investigation into regarding his possession of thousands of government documents, about 300 of which have been marked as classified.
The Special Counsel is also investigating attempts to undo Trump's defeat in the 2020 election, culminating in the deadly attack on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.< /p>
