Jeffrey Epstein offered to help the daughter of former Barclays chief executive Jes Staley secure a place at a prestigious US university, it was alleged.

Pedophile financier said he could imagine Mr. Staley addressing the president of Columbia University in Davos to secure a place for his daughter in a doctoral course, according to a previously confidential report.

Epstein also reportedly offered to contact various Colombian officials on behalf of Mr. Staley's daughter.

The accusations were made in a 22-page internal review by JP Morgan, where Mr. Staley was once a high-profile figure. a banker in charge of wealthy clients, including Epstein. Mr. Staley left the U.S. lender in 2013 to take over at Barclays two years later.

It also alleged that Epstein regularly gave Mr. Staley personal and business advice, including scheduling meetings with senior officials in foreign governments.< /p>

A report written in 2019 after Epstein committed suicide in a prison cell and first published by the Wall Street Journal says he appears to have developed close ties with senior executives and government officials, including a politician from New Labor Party by Lord Mandelson.

Epstein then tried to connect these employees with Mr. Staley and JP Morgan for business deals and international expansion, he added.

Lord Mandelson told the magazine that his ties to Epstein were already known and that he «greatly regrets ever being introduced» to the billionaire, adding that they never had any professional or business relationship.

Last week, JP Morgan agreed to pay $290m (£232m) to settle a lawsuit alleging the bank knowingly profited from the sex trafficking of its former client, Jeffrey Epstein.< /p>

The American bank said it had reached an agreement in principle. to settle a proposed class action lawsuit initiated by Epstein's unnamed victim late last year.

JP Morgan is still facing a similar lawsuit filed by the United States Virgin Islands (USVI), where the financier had a private hideout where he brought several their victims.

The American bank is also still running its own business. against Mr Staley. He stated that Mr. Staley should be held liable for any damage he suffered in connection with his ties to Epstein, as he managed the bank's relationship with a pedophile financier during his time there.

Epstein was JP Morgan customer for 15 years. years until 2013, including the period after his conviction in 2008 for sexual behavior of children.

The ongoing USVI lawsuit against JP Morgan alleges that Epstein's behavior was so widely known at JP Morgan that senior bankers joked about his interest in young girls.

Mr. Staley had a personal relationship with Epstein, when he was a bank customer visiting a late pedophile on his Caribbean island.

Unsealed emails allege that Mr. Staley drank white wine in a jacuzzi on Epstein's private Caribbean island while he was under house arrest for sexual crimes against children.< /p>

While both lawsuits mention Mr. Staley's relationship with the disgraced financier to claim that JP Morgan knew about sex trafficking, neither name the former head of the bank as a defendant.

Mr. Staley has repeatedly denied knowledge of Epstein's sexual abuse. .

A Columbia University spokesman said, “There was no meeting between the president and Staley. Neither then nor later did the president know Epstein. There is no factual basis for these claims.”

JP Morgan declined to comment. Staley's lawyer was contacted for comment.

Last week, JP Morgan said: «We now all understand that Epstein's behavior was heinous and we believe this settlement is in the best interest of all parties, especially the survivors who have suffered unimaginable violence at the hands of this man.» .

“Any association with him was a mistake and we regret it. We would never do business with him if we thought he was using our bank in any way to commit heinous crimes.”
