James Cleverly denies he will step down as MP in next election

James Cleverly said he was re-elected by his constituency association. MP in next election after Allies said he was considering resigning.

The foreign secretary was said to have been frustrated by the “total mess” of the Conservative Party's internal clashes and wanted to spend more time with his wife , who is recovering from breast cancer, and his teenage children.

An associate said Mr. Cleverly loved his job as foreign secretary and was afraid to work in the opposition, where “leading a party is the best job, which he could get. . A second colleague said that he thought he had “worked out” and “wants to move on.”

In response to The Telegraph, a spokesman for Mr Cleverley declined to confirm that he would run in the next election, and a Foreign Office source denied that he had discussed it with his “inner team”.

The source added He did not speculate, suggest, share, or outline any suggestion on this matter to any of his closest collaborators. If he had thought about it, he would have done it. He's not entirely sure why anyone would think he did it.”

Mr Cleverley later tweeted that he intended to run and was re-elected by his constituency association.

Rishi Sunak faces an MP exodus ahead of the next election, with opinion polls and a looming economic crisis suggesting the Tories will lose.

It's no secret that more MPs will decide to step down before next year's elections, even though last December the Conservative Party was given a deadline to make their intentions clear.

People close to Mr. -well, Cleverly, he was told that he expressed doubts about running again for his constituency of Braintree, Essex, despite the fact that he received almost 25,000 votes.

The departure of a senior minister from a major public office will put additional pressure on Mr. Sunak to convince his MPs that he can still win the general election.

A source close to Mr. Cleverley , told The Telegraph: “I don't think you can go from being foreign minister during an international crisis like Ukraine to years in opposition when party leader is the best job he can get.”

“The Conservative Party is in a mess right now, so he's thinking of taking the opportunity to spend more time with his family.”

Another senior MP said: “Let's be honest – he loves being foreign minister and traveling the world.

“Susie, his dear wife, is recovering from cancer and his children are growing up. He may say, “I have served my time. I served in a high government position, that's all.”

Downing Street launched an offensive against conservative supporters led by James Forsyth, Mr Sunak's political secretary, and Craig Williams, his private parliamentary secretary.< /p>

The MPs were invited to a summer barbecue with the Prime Minister while their spouses will be hosted by Akshata Murthy, his wife number 10.

One former cabinet minister said: “They want as many experienced ministers and former ministers as possible to stay, because this maintains the credibility of the party in general.

“But some guys, veterans of many elections, are going to say, 'Oh my God, do you really want me to do another climb?'

Another added: “When it comes to autumn, you will see other people will be announced that they are going to retreat. Some colleagues simply can't hold a general election.”

Mr Cleverly is seen as one of the survivors of the Boris Johnson administration, who has been in the cabinet full-time since last July.

He was first appointed by Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, who was his immediate predecessor in the ministry. Mr. Sunak reappointed him to the role in October.

The MP spoke publicly about his wife's cancer, telling Sky News last November that he “cannot speak or sleep” and feared that she dies.

“I didn't think about my mortality, and I certainly never thought about losing Susie or what that might be, and then suddenly having to face it,” – he said.
