The giant costume consists of pitta and stuffing, including shredded lettuce wrapped in foil. the kebab was sold at auction for US$16,025 (£9,305) after a month-long war between competitors who were bitterly divided over whether the salad should be wrapped.
PrimeTime Donaire and Putin have won a Canadian government auction for a life-size suit, beating 1,710 bids for a giant suit that consists of pitta and stuffing, including lettuce shavings wrapped in foil.
4ft suit 8″ was originally created in 2015 for use in a government-sponsored safety commercial in Alberta.
Inspired by the Greek gyroscope and Turkish doner kebab, doner was created in the mid-1970s by Peter Gamulakos in Halifax, Nova Scotia.< /p>
It is made from sliced spicy ground beef wrapped in pitta and topped with a sweet sauce made from condensed milk, vinegar and sugar.
Gamulakos changed the traditional recipe after the locals lost their taste for garlic, yogurt and lamb.< /p>
However, the east and west of the country are divided on whether there is a place for salad in food.
While in Halifax, which declared doner its official food in 2015 would never include a salad in their version, Albertans would never dream of serving the delicacy without it.
Bet War
So when outlets in the east said they would reconfigure the suit and remove the lettuce if they won the auction, a furious bidding war ensued.
“We raced to get the donaire suit, but we stayed in race because of what the people who were betting against us were saying,” Adil Asim, owner of Alberta-based PrimeTime Donair and Poutine, told The Guardian.
“A couple of Donair stores in Maritimes were interviewed by the media information, and they said that if they got the suit, they would remove the salad,” he added.
The Halifax King of Donair restaurant chain bills itself as the first Donair store in Canada, having opened in 1973.
Co-owner Nicholas Nahas has previously said his team is determined to bring the suit to the East Coast.
“It's a pride. «, Mr. Nahas said last week. «We are not ashamed to say that we are the first to introduce donar in Canada… We think it should be here in Halifax, as silly as that sounds.»
