Eddie Nketiah: Thierry Henry helped me overcome setbacks in career< p>Mike McGrath
It was under the leadership of Thierry Henry Eddy that Nketiah overcame setbacks on his way to being called up to the England squad this week.
Arsenal's top scorer was the club's academy manager, when Nketiah played in Arsenal's junior age group and the pair have been close ever since.
Nketiah was sacked from Chelsea at 14, on the same day as Declan Rice, and his path to Gareth Southgate's side took him through a breakout loan at Leeds and through the post-Arsene Wenger era when managers Arsenal gave him fleeting opportunities.
Now 24 years old, he has benefited from regular matches this season under Mikel Arteta and started the campaign ahead of Gabriel Jesus, leading to a text message from Southgate. His opportunity came from Henry's advice, he saw his potential at Arsenal's young players' headquarters in Hale End. .
“His best advice was to just believe in yourself. He came and saw what qualities I had when I was a freshman and said that I just need to believe in myself, whatever others say is what will motivate you. It's probably one of the best tips I've ever received,” said Nketiah.
“Thierry was great for me. It was one of my best and most enjoyable seasons, I was able to exchange ideas with him and he gave me a lot of confidence, and to this day, when I see him, he still supports me and really helps.”
Nketii was presented with Henry's famous number 14 shirt, which he says he is trying to make his mark rather than recreate the Frenchman's great moments at Arsenal. After a painful release from Chelsea, he is determined to make the most of his career with Arteta's side, who have scored two goals in four matches at the start of the campaign.
“I think it made me more determined,” Nketiah said. “I was at Chelsea from nine to 14 years old and it came as a shock to me because at the time I was doing well. Obviously, Declan [Rice] also belonged to this age group and had a similar experience.
“I think it gives you an awakening and the very realization that things can change like this, that you can lose everything you worked for. This gives you extra motivation and resilience during difficult times. I can dig a level deeper than some people may or may not want to go. It's all part of the experience. Some boys may not have experienced it, but then there were setbacks in their careers. It was my journey and it helped me become who I am today.”
Nketiah admitted he lost his temper when he was called up to the England squad and he celebrated the occasion with his family and a close friend at home. He plays at home to St George's Park, having spent a career with the England team and being the under-21 top scorer. He is also eligible to play for Ghana but would like to move to England.
“Obviously both sides have always been an option, I think naturally having gone academy in England obviously you have aspirations to play here and as I said once the call was there and the offer was on the table, he was really hard to give up and I felt like it was a natural development for me at that stage,” he said.
“I felt now It was a good time to take this step, so obviously I very happy to be here and proud to be here, as I said. I hope I can continue to work and help the team this week and play some matches.”
As for the seniors, he hopes to learn from another legend. After Henry's advice, he wants to brainwash Harry Kane.
“Maybe I have some notes on my phone! I think it will make the conversation a little easier (now he has left Tottenham),” he joked. «Obviously now that he's made the transition, he's a fantastic player and I wish him all the best for his next chapter.»
