A special grand jury convened to help investigate Donald Trump's interference in the Georgia election has recommended that Lindsey Graham be charged with attempting to overturn the 2020 vote.
Grand jury report released in Friday, revealed that the panel had called for the indictment of Mr. Graham, the South Carolina senator, as well as two former senators, two Trump advisers and a lawyer.
None of them were ultimately charged by Fanie Willis, the district attorney responsible for bringing charges against Mr. Trump and 18 others. co-conspirators in a «criminal enterprise» to overturn the state's election results.
The first defendant will go on trial in Georgia next month, but Trump's televised trial won't begin until next year.
Ms. Willis originally asked for the former president's trial to begin on March 4, but it is likely to be delayed because the election interference case he faces in Washington is now scheduled to begin that day.
Prosecutors say the trial will last four months and include testimony from 150 witnesses, although Scott McAfee, the judge overseeing the case, said the timeline is “a little unrealistic.”A special grand jury was convened. during Ms. Willis' investigation of the defendants and helped her gather some of the evidence that would be heard during the trials.
Attempts to contact election officials
It was then disbanded so that a regular grand jury could be convened to vote on which potential defendant should be indicted.
It is unclear whether Ms. Willis will be able to return to the remaining numbers that the special grand jury was investigating for further charges in the future.
Mr. Graham, for his part, has come under scrutiny for his efforts to contact the Georgia election. officials after the 2020 vote.
During the state's recount, he tried to pressure election officials over vote-counting procedures and then resisted a special grand jury's attempt to question him about his actions.
Most of the 23 jurors called to help in the investigation of Ms. Willis recommended that he too be indicted, the report said.
The jury also recommended charges against Michael Flynn, the former national security adviser, and Boris Epstein. strategic adviser to Trump's 2020 presidential campaign.
David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler, former senators from Georgia, and Cleta Mitchell, an attorney and conservative campaigner, were also recommended for charges for their alleged involvement in «national effort to overturn the 2020 election.»
The trial of Kenneth Chesebro, one of 19 defendants facing racketeering charges to overturn the result, begins Oct. 23.
A Trump ally is trying to move the case forward.
In another case, a key Trump ally had a plea for The transfer of his Georgia case to federal court has been denied.
Mark Meadows, Trump's former chief of staff, has filed to have his case removed from Fulton County, where all 19 defendants have been charged.
Steve K. Jones, a judge for the Northern District of Georgia, denied his request, stating that «the criminal case has no federal jurisdiction.»
«Result The final decision in this case will be made by a Fulton County judge and a trier of fact.» , he said.
Mr. Meadows was the first defendant to try to take his case to federal court, where a future president could pardon all those convicted.
Many expect Trump will do the same, although the judge's decision in the Meadows case suggests that a successful transfer is unlikely.
