Fire engulfs wedding in Iraq, killing more than 100 people were killed and another 150 were injured.

Early Wednesday morning, civil defense personnel searched the charred skeleton of a building in the Hamdaniya district of Iraq's Nineveh province for survivors.

Nineveh Deputy Governor Hassan al-Allaq told Reuters that 113 people were confirmed dead, with state media putting the death toll at at least 100 and 150 injured.

The fire burned across a large area. an event hall in the northeastern region after fireworks were lit during a celebration, local civil defense said, according to state media.

“Every effort is being made to provide assistance to those injured in the accident. — said the representative of the Ministry of Health Saif al-Badr.

Najim al-Juburi, governor of Nineveh province, said some of the wounded had been transferred to regional hospitals.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the building caught fire around 10:45 p.m. local time and that hundreds of people were inside at the time of the incident.

Federal Iraqi authorities sent ambulances and medical teams to the scene of the fire . and the semi-autonomous Iraqi region of Kurdistan, according to official statements.

Video taken by a Reuters reporter from the scene shows firefighters climbing through the charred rubble of the building, shining flashlights into the smoldering rubble in search of survivors.

Preliminary information suggests the building was made of flammable building materials contributed to its rapid collapse, state media reported.

“The fire caused parts of the hall to collapse as a result of the use of flammable, inexpensive building materials that would collapse within minutes when the fire broke out,” they said civil defense officials quoted by the Iraqi News Agency.
