James Cleverley promised police chiefs that he would «praise publicly» and «criticize privately».
In a thinly veiled attack on Suella Braverman, his predecessor, the new minister Internal Affairs told delegates at the police summit that he did not want a “conflictual relationship.”
Ms Braverman was fired on Monday, just days after publishing a newspaper column in which she accused police of bias in their approach to the protests. Her comments were criticized as an attack on the operational independence of the police.
Speaking at the annual summit of the National Police Chiefs Council and the Association of Police and Crime Commissioners in Westminster, Mr Cleverley made clear he wanted a reset in relations between the Home Office affairs and forces.
He said, “I will always support you if you do the right thing. I will criticize you if I think you need to be criticized, but I will always do so in a professional, calm and direct manner so that we always maintain this professional working relationship.
“I think you can have complex relationships that require excellence and professionalism, without the need to be in a conflictual relationship, the two are not inextricably linked. And that's why you know that for those of you who have worked with me before, my instinct is always to praise in public and criticize in private.
«And if you, your officers and staff respond with this style of working, I truly believe that we can maximize the work we do on behalf of the British people, and ultimately that is my goal.»
Mr Cleverley made similar remarks when speaking to civil servants after taking up his post at the Home Office.
In his address to police chiefs, he said he was aware of the pressure that the current large-scale protests are putting on their forces.He said: “We all recognize that these are very, very difficult times, not just pressing issues policing, which I know is having a ripple effect across the country, and the pressure of policing will be felt not just in the capital, not just in the Metropolitan Police, but throughout the country. /p>
“But we are also very aware of digital crime putting new and evolving pressure on you, your officers, your force and the communities you serve. This is a difficult time.»
Mr Cleverley stressed the importance of an effective police force to best protect the public, saying: «We want to ensure that every hour, every penny, is used in service to the people we are here to serve. protect.
“We have a duty to the British people to work constructively together for their benefit. And I want you to know that as much as it is possible to have an open door policy when you are Home Secretary, I want you to feel that you can talk to me and my team.»
He said that he will wholeheartedly support the police and champion their successes, adding: “Let me know of individuals or teams that should be celebrated.
“I want the people of this country to see you and your teams succeed. I want to share that your success is an important part of the trust we need to build in the police force of this country.»
