MOSCOW, November 21Employees of the Joint Institute for High Temperatures (JIHT) of the Russian Academy of Sciences have proven that solitary waves — solitons can transfer not only energy, but also matter, the press service of the institute reported.

"According to the generally accepted point of view, which is recorded in most modern university physics textbooks, waves transfer energy and information, but do not transfer matter. Physicists from the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences have proven that this is not so,” the report says.
“Scientists have analyzed the properties of solitons — solitary waves that exist due to the balance of nonlinear and dispersion effects. Such waves are quite widespread in nature: the most obvious examples of solitons can be considered a tsunami or a tidal wave,” the press service added.
< br />During the study, physicists analyzed the properties of more “exotic” waves—acoustic-type plasma solitons. It turned out that when they move, they carry out one-way transfer of matter. Moreover, scientists were able to prove that matter transfer is an integral, fundamental property of solitons.
As Fyodor Trukhachev, a senior researcher at the Joint Institute for High Temperatures of the Russian Academy of Sciences and one of the authors of the scientific publication, said, quoted by the press service, the data obtained will allow us to take into account additional factors to ensure the safety of power grids. In addition, with their help, it is possible to predict space weather with greater accuracy and make the necessary calculations when designing spacecraft.
«The results obtained are not only of theoretical significance. In the future, they can be used in the analysis of flows of charged particles in plasma, including including space, when studying processes in the Earth’s magnetosphere and solar activity, and can also be used in tsunami warning systems and to solve other theoretical and practical problems,” Trukhachev said.
