On Sunday, a presentation of the documentary film “Medvedeva VS Medvedeva” took place at the Oktyabr cinema in Moscow. . The film shows archival footage of the young figure skater’s first steps on ice, working with Eteri Tutberidze, but the culmination was the events of 2018 at the Olympic Games, when Evgenia Medvedeva, as a world champion, lost to 15-year-old Alina Zagitova by 1.31 points and took second place. There are still debates among fans about who deserved to win more at that moment, but the film showed that this is already a passed stage, which it is time to stop perceiving as the tragedy of the great champion.
Indeed, many people do not understand how one can worry about second place for so long. But the fact is that all athletes go not just for medals, but for gold. This is the reward for everyday work and training through pain that no other prizes or money can replace. And, of course, for figure skaters like Medvedeva or Alexandra Trusova, second place is a defeat. And this is not just the psychology of a certain athlete, this is what comes from the entire sports system in Russia. Both athletes confirm this in their interviews.
«
“Either gold or nothing. Psychologically they drive it into your head that this is the goal of your life. And when I didn’t get it, I thought that I had lost my life,” Medvedeva admits.
Someone might say that with a strong desire, figure skaters have at least one more chance to win and prove that they are the ones worthy of gold. But the reality is that most of the athletes reach the Olympics already at the peak of their form and it is not a fact that they will be able to maintain the same condition for another 4 years.
Medvedeva did not arrive at the Olympic Games in perfect readiness. As the figure skater’s mother Zhanna recalled: “Zhenya started preparing two months before the Olympics. The fifth metatarsal bone was simply crushed. My right leg hurt, and this is any landing. As a result, the bone just crumbles. But here is the Olympics, and if you come, you perform.” It is not for nothing that they say that sport is a type of war. The main struggle often occurs not with rivals, but with oneself. And Medvedeva definitely won this battle.
Now it definitely cannot be perceived solely in the context of a silver medal at the Olympics. Almost 6 years after those events, she continues to sell out ice shows, hosts her own show on YouTube, is a regular guest on popular programs both on television and on social networks, and releases a clothing collection. We can talk for a long time about her projects, but, in my opinion, this is enough to prove that Medvedeva is one of the most successful figure skaters who realized themselves outside of sports. Perhaps it was hard work that helped her survive the events of the Olympic Games, and now she boldly says that she is moving on.
“
“I’m such a different person, it was so long ago, so when they seriously ask me whether I regret it or not — but I don’t remember. It was six years ago. Look at me now and at me at the Olympics. These are two different people. I am living the life that I have always dreamed of. I didn’t even dream of , but I had no idea that it was possible to live like this. How can we talk about regrets? I have plans for tomorrow and the day after tomorrow, no plans for the past,» Medvedeva said.
Very joyful to see that Zhenya was able to realize herself not only in sports, but also in another area. And her apt remark “those who never fell did not rise” after a not entirely successful appearance on stage at the premiere of the film can now be perceived as the figure skater’s life credo.
