Chinese physicists have denied the sensational statement of their South Korean colleagues , in which they claimed to have discovered the world's first high-temperature superconductor, LK-99, using lead and copper. Matter magazine published the actual results.
As stated in the source, the compound LK-99 with the chemical formula Pb10-xCux(PO4)6O has a small amount of copper sulfide. This substance changes at a relatively low temperature of about 126 degrees Celsius.
Scientists studied the transport and magnetic properties of pure Cu2S and LK-99 along with this impurity and realized that the resistivity of copper sulfide decreases by three to four orders of magnitude at a temperature of 111 degrees. The value is close to the original one. The mixture of LK-99 and Cu2S also showed a sharp resistivity transition and exhibited weak diamagnetic properties.
But Chinese scientists were never able to consider the zero resistance that was declared by their South Korean colleagues. That is why LK-99, with an admixture of copper sulfide, undergoes a first-order phase transition, which is significantly different from a second-order superconducting transition.
In 2023, physicists from South Korea reported that they had made a new discovery that would revolutionize humanity. They created the first superconductor that operated at room temperature and atmospheric pressure. A mixture of lead and copper LK-99, in their opinion, conducted electricity without resistance.
